Ben Rabba:

AHR 29921, K D Matthiot. 57,72% Crabbet Ringo was just a leggy colt when Ed Hubbert saw him and spotted his potential. When Ed bought him he changed Ringos name to Ben Rabba. He could never have guessed what impact this long-legged youngster could have on the Arabian breed.

Until meeting Ed, Ringo had spent his babyhood at Rancho Carmelo, along with his sire, Aurab and dam, Rollicka. Rollicka was said to be a small chestnut, with an exquisite head.

Ben Rabba, with his amateur owner, went on to attain a very impessive show record. Some of these included US Top Ten Ladies Side Saddle, Pacific Slope Champion Reserve Stallion, Pacific Slope Champion Western Pleasure, Region 3 Champion Stallion, Region 3 Champion Native Costume, Region 3 Top Five English Pleasure, Region 3 Top Five Ladies Side Saddle and Region 3 Top Five Western Pleasure. He went on to win many more championships in all divisions of Arabian horse shows. He was the epitome of the versatile and adaptable Arabian horse.

In the late 70-ies, Beatrice Paine from Bowdell Stud in England leased Ben Rabba for some 2 1/2 years, at a time when some of the early Crabbet lines in England had been lost to exportation, and the need to find an import to restore them was paramount. Well, Ben Rabba proved the be the right choice. He had 44 progeny, exactly half fillies and half colts. His get have attained show honors, and many have been exported to other countries. Some of these winning get of Ben Rabbas were: Al Maurab, Aureme(a grandaughter), and Aukubra. In the US the Ben Rabba son Haji Rabba, won the title of Regional Champion English Pleasure Gelding, as well as winning all his qualifying classes.

When Ben Rabba came back to the US, he went to live in Marysville to stand at stud at Jewell Cantrells. And when Ed worried about his failing heart, he made up a will for Ben Rabba and his son Haji Rabba. He left them both to Jewell Cantrell, knowing they would have a good home until they died. Ed died in 1989, and Ben Rabba had a new owner. A few months after Ben came to live with the Cantrells permanently, Rollicka also arrived. She was 30 years at the time. They shared the same pasture, swatting flies, grooming each other, and just passing time.

When Ben colicked, they tried night and day to save him, but soon knew it was hopeless, and he would not recover. He went for his last trailer ride, and was buried on a knoll, overlooking the future site of where his mares and foals would graze in Gridley, for the next year the ranch would be moving there.

Ben Rabba was undoubtedly Aurabs most successful son. He was also the first purebred Aurab sire. Ben Rabba was beautiful. He had a long neck, fabulous hindquarters and a very pretty head. He stood 15.1 1/2 hands. He was a multi-champion and surpassed his sire in renown. He has quality stock in the US, Canada, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, and Israel
